- Cut printed tiles carefully and accurately. Otherwise your
medallion won't fit together well no matter how carefully you fold it.
- Keep your thumbnails long enough to crease folds well or use a bone
folder. A piece of plastic such as a credit card will also act as a
bone folder.
- If you have trouble getting tight folds you can use a toothpick to get
into corners.
- Print out extra tiles and experiment to see which fold works best with
your pattern.
- Make sure all of your folds face the same way before gluing.
- Use a glue bottle that only gives a little dab of glue. You can
buy small adaptors to fit over glue bottle tips or alternatively use a pin
or toothpick to dab on the glue. Some prefer taking a small portion of
glue from a glue stick rather than liquid glue.
- If you have a bit of white showing after you have folded, you can
carefully cut this part off and in the majority of cases it won't be
noticed.
- Use the printing template for positioning kite tiles.
- Have lots of medallions ready to make quick cards.
- If you want your medallions to lie flatter, put a dab of glue between
the layers.
- If you make your own tiles from a picture, print out the picture as well
for the card so that people can see the end result of the medallion.
- Keep a copy of the different folds in a book with instructions to remind
you how you did the different folds.
- If you use someone else's tile, it is nice to give them the credit if
you post a picture of your card on line.
- When your medallion is finished and you have a hole, you can always use
a brad or an embellishment in the center to hide the hole.
- When cutting out a cut tile, if the area you need to cut is skinny, you
can always put a piece of scotch tape on the backside to give it strength as
you cut it out and the remaining scotch tape can just be left on.
- When layering, co-ordinate your colours whenever possible.
- Using decorative scissors on the edges of the folded tiles gives a
different unique look to tiles.
- Don't rush and have fun!
