The Box Card

Don't panic when you read these directions.  It sounds very complicated it is not hard once you get the hang of it.  The best part is that your finished box does NOT have to be perfect.  It is going to be completely covered with cardstock. Minor imperfections simply will not show.  This card is called a box card because when you pull at the sides it opens up to be a box that is suitable for inserting little things like store gift cards.  See the top cardstock above the snowman's hat and at the bottom where you see a split?  That is where the card opens up. The top cardstock with the snowman does not split open. It is glued to the right hand of the card only.

What you need:

1. You can score if you want, and fold the paper as you would a business letter so that there are three sections that are all 3½ inches wide. 2. Then fold back the right and left sections so that each side is 1¾ in width and the edges are now on the outside. 3. Fold down each corner forward  to the center line.

4. This step is not really necessary but some found it helpful for doing step 5.  Fold each backward to equal your fold in step3. (The scan cut off the tips, they are supposed to be there!) 5.  This step is tricky, pull down each corner so that it looks like this. You have to look carefully to see the edges, they are parallel to the tips of the center corners.  Don't worry if your folds aren't perfect. 6. Turn over paper and fold the triangles to the back as shown.

7.  This is another tricky part and difficult to show you.  Turn your project to the front again and open it all up.  Fold the triangles that you just made to the inside to the center and fold the paper so that it looks like this.  If you look carefully you can see that the triangles are towards the middle and there is nothing in between the center line at the top and bottom fold. The triangles are facing each other in the middle of the sheet. 8.  Fold the right layer over onto the left side and then fold each section down towards the center part.  9.  Then fold the layer back onto itself.   Turn and repeat steps 8 and 9 for the other side.

10.  Your finished box part will look like this and when you pull the top part at the sides you will see that you have made a box.  If you did....Congratulations!  Now you get to finish it.  Remember it doesn't have to be perfect, it won't show. 11.  Take one your pieces of cardstock and use it as a backing for the box you just made.  I prefer if the cardstock is one sided to have the pattern facing towards the front.  Center and tape your box onto this cardstock. 12.  Cut your other piece of cardstock in half vertically and center each strip so that each strip matches the cardstock at the back.  Do not worry about aligning it to the box you created.  Both cardstocks need to line up correctly.
13.  Finally take your smaller piece of cardstock with your embellishment and center it on the card......BUT only adhere it to the right side of the card.  You want your box to open!
